Keeping Pets Cozy Through the Seasons

Not every pet needs clothing — but some genuinely do. Thin coats, small bodies, seniors, and certain breeds lose heat fast. Here's how to tell, and how to layer right.

Who benefits from a layer

Short-haired and fine-boned dogs, small breeds, puppies, and seniors are the most likely to feel the cold.

Watch for shivering, tucked tails, lifted paws, or reluctance to go outside — these are your cues.

Fit matters more than warmth

A good knit should slip on without pinching the neck or armpits — aim for two fingers of room. A leash-port opening keeps walks simple.

Layer up for wet days with a waterproof shell and grippy boots, then peel back indoors so your pet doesn't overheat.

Comfort, not costume

Clothing should never restrict movement, breathing, or sight. If your pet freezes in place or tries to back out of it, give them a break and try a lighter layer.
